Summer, unfortunately is coming to an end and instead of looking forward to picking apples and building snowmen we are worried about the rising price of home heating oil. Many people here in Madison are reworking their financial budget for the year while others are seeking different, more affordable heating possibilities.
A way to find other heating options is by visiting the Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Here they have a special conservatory exhibit: Yesterdays Plant’s Todays Energy. At this exhibit one can discover alternative energy sources that can be used in the future. At this event you can also observe other interesting facts on how prehistoric plants, such as ferns and moss, have formed some of today’s energy sources.
For more information call 608-246-44500 or visit their website here.
Hope to see you there.

It’s that time of year again, the annual Taste of Madison 2008!
This wonderful benefit is brought to you by United Cerebal Palsy of Greater Dane County. Dane County’s UCP is serving up another action packed Labor Day weekend filled with loads of live entertainment and food from more than 60 area restaurants and caterers. UCP volunteers will be busy serving beer, wine, and soda from 20 beverage stands. Come out and support this great Wisconsin based charity that provides services to individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. All tips go directly to help fund UCP’s programs, so don’t forget to tip your bartenders (and tip them Good!!)!
The official Taste of Madison program will be distributed in the August 28 edition of Wisconsin State Journal. Thousands of additional programs will be available at the event at the Wisconsin State Journal’s booths and various beverage stands. Don’t miss out on this free admission event. Hope to see you there.

In the last post we discussed some tips on how to be a greener Madison homeowner. A good resource to help you out with the greening of your home is www.energystar.gov. Energy Star is a government-backed joint effort between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that helps Americans save money and protect the environment by practicing energy efficiency. The results have been impressive: In 2007 alone, with the help of Energy Star, Americans saved enough energy to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equal to those from 27 million cars. At the same time, we were able to save a collective $16 billion on our utility bills!
…Remember: being environmentally conscious doesn’t mean that you have to turn your lifestyle around. You don’t have to sacrifice features, style, or comfort. Making a few small changes can make a huge difference to the environment. As a homeowner, do your part to keep up Madison’s reputation as a green destination!
